History

The Darmstadt Hospital is proud for its very long tradition: Almost 200 years ago, in 1808, the hospital was founded on today’s site right in the center of Darmstadt.
   
In 1823, the hospital was established as the Municipal Hospital of the City of Darmstadt.
   
During the last years of the war the hospital was almost completely destroyed. After the war it was re-established on the same site. Rapidly, the hospital treated an increasing number of patients and expanded, and soon more space was needed for the hospital: The existing area at the Grafenstrasse site could not be expanded, and a second facility of the hospital was established in Darmstadt-Eberstadt.

The Darmstadt Hospital as of today

Today, the Darmstadt Hospital as a modern tertiary hospital covers a wide range of medical specialities, including 13 different clinical departments and 5 medical institutes. With approximately 1.000 beds it provides the whole spectrum of patient care, including specialized medical facilities such as Multi Slice CT scan, Nuclear Medicine, MRI, cardiac catheterization lab, lithotripsy service (treatment of kidney stones), linear accelerator unit (for external beam radiation cancer treatments), and other specialised diagnostic and treatment facilities.

The Darmstadt hospital also provides a Dialysis Center, a Cancer Center, an Interdisciplinary Vascular Center. The Perinatal Center, the Diabetic Department and the Neurology Department are certified.

The Darmstadt hospital is an academic teaching hospital of the Universities of Heidelberg/Mannheim and Frankfurt and participates in the training and education of medical students. It also includes a nursing school and a teaching unit for physician assistants.

With approximately 2.000 employees, the hospital is one of the largest employers in the region.
